Sample Saturdays: “Rhinestone Cowboy” by Madvillain

The Olympics are still taking place in Brazil and I’m half-way supporting it (It’s done too much damage to Brazil and Brazil’s poor). For today’s Sample Saturday, I’m going to introduce you to the Brazilian pop singer, Maria Bethânia, and how she influenced Madlib and MF Doom. MF Doom and Madlib formed the duo, Madvillain, in 2002. In 2004, the two created their debut 22-track album, Madvilliany. The last track, Rhinestone Cowboy, was recorded in Brazil and it sampled two songs by Bethânia. Maria Bethânia is known as one of the 10 best-selling music artists in Brazil. She has 50 studio albums and has sold more than 26 million records.

The two respective samples from Bethânia are Molambo and Mariana, Mariana. The sample Molambo is from Bethânia’s 1968 live album Recital Na Boite Barroco. Mariana,Mariana is from her 1971 albumA Tua Presença.  The two songs are slow, soft ballads laced with violins and a piano. Madlib’s ear is so smart he sampled small parts from each song and created a cool piercing beat and intro. MF Doom laid his verses on top and created a larger cult of die hard rap fans. Bethânia crooned on songs 40+ years ago and added to the internet hip hop culture. All of this was done through sampling.

aafleur recommendation: Listen to the samples first!
